Staurosporine is a prototypical potent ATP-competitive kinase inhibitor with IC50 of 0.7, 7, 8.5, 6, 20 nM for PKC, PKA,PKG, p60v-src tyrosine protein kinase, CaM kinase II, respectively. Staurosporine was discovered to have biological activities ranging from anti-fungal to anti-hypertensive. The interest in these activities resulted in a large investigative effort in chemistry and biology and the discovery of the potential for anti-cancer treatment. Staurosporine induces apoptosis in human neuroblastoma cell lines and chick embryonic neurons. Staurosporine is a natural product originally isolated from the bacterium Streptomyces staurosporeus.
