Celecoxib is a highly selective COX-2 inhibitor and primarily inhibits this isoform of cyclooxygenase (and thus causes inhibition of prostaglandin production). ^[1]
Celecoxib is more selective for COX-2 (IC50=0.04μM)inhibition over COX-1(IC50=15μM). ^[2]It binds with its polar sulfonamide side chain to a hydrophilic side pocket region close to the active COX-2 binding site. ^[1]
Celecoxib is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID) that is used to treat arthritis, pain, menstrual cramps, and colonic polyps. ^[1]
